In our upcoming fragmentiX OS (frXOS) update, we’re expanding our list of approved EU-based storage providers with Leviia (France) and Plusserver (Germany). These will be fully integrated with pre-configured templates in our user interface.
With this update, we now have five approved cloud storage providers within the EU27 – an important advantage for customers prioritizing GDPR compliance and data protection from foreign state access.
Storage LOCATIONs in frXOS
To use a fragmentiX Appliance, you first define storage LOCATIONs – the physical destination, on-premise or in the cloud, where your encrypted data fragments are stored. Our technology is based on the cryptographic method of secret sharing, which splits your data into multiple fragments. You define how many fragments are created in total and the number of fragments (threshold) needed to reconstruct the data. Access to fewer than threshold fragments provides zero information.
Our technology is considered quantum-safe and therefore ensures that accessing a single data fragment – through legal or illegal means – does not reveal any usable information, even to quantum computers.
While we offer a “Generic S3 Providers” template to accommodate all S3 compatible cloud storage options, we have a number of approved cloud storage providers where we regularly test the compatibility and their support of all features used by fragmentiX Appliances.
Approved S3-Compatible Cloud Providers
- Amazon AWS (USA)
- Wasabi (USA)
- Impossible Cloud (Germany)
- IONOS (Germany)
- EWW | ITandTEL (Austria)
- Leviia (France)
- Plusserver (Germany)
- Linode (USA)
- Alibaba (China)
- Backblaze (USA)
- MinIO (e.g., self hosted)
Other Supported Storage Types
In addition to these S3 cloud storage providers, we support other storage types, which come with a different feature set and might be valuable for other use cases.
- MS Azure Blob storage (USA)
- NFS servers
- USB devices

Approved EU27 Cloud Service Providers
While the tech giants and cloud service provider (Amazon AWS, Microsoft, …) are located in the United States, they have data centers all over the world. Even if you select a European region, according to the US CLOUD act the companies with their headquarters in the United States have to comply and provide your data to government agencies and parties with legitimate interest. In order to avoid this and offer our customers viable alternatives, we are keen to find, approve and include EU27 based cloud service providers in our user interface or even start a partnership with them.
This does not mean, that you can’t take advantage of very cost-efficient storage provider in the rest of the world, but we strongly encourage you to only do this for less than threshold of your fragments. This will keep your data safe, as not even quantum computers can extract any data out of less than threshold fragments!
The first Austrian storage provider, EWW ITandTEL and their cloud solution Ventuscloud, was approved in 2023 in frXOS 2.2.1. Combined with on premises storage at customer site it was possible to set up minimal strategies (three fragments total with threshold two for restoring) where only less than threshold fragments are stored outside of Europe.
Early in 2025, the German cloud service providers Impossible Cloud and IONOS were approved as well in the update to frXOS 2.8.0 and a partnership with Impossible Cloud was formed.
In our next update, to be released in July 2025, we will take our first French cloud service provider Leviia and another German provider Plusserver on board with regular tests for compatibility and a template in our user interface!
With five approved EU27 cloud providers now available, users can implement more resilient and possibly more efficient storage strategies, without deploying storage hardware on-premises. “Five out of nine storage strategies,” with a threshold of five fragments in the EU and nine total fragments can be used without compromising on security (since only four fragments are hosted in the rest of the world)!
Details on the Approval of Storage Providers
We aim to follow the S3 protocol as closely as possible in our implementation, which means fragmentiX Appliances are compatible with any S3-compatible storage provider.
For storage providers we officially approve, we run a defined set of tests to ensure they meet our minimum technical requirements. These tests are performed directly on the provider’s S3 buckets. Additionally we support Microsoft Azure Blob Storage with a similar test protocol.
The automatic tests include:
- Up- and download of files
- Multipart uploads
- Deletion of files
- List requests
- Retention settings
- Other minor requests
Some optional features like versioning and object locking (WORM) are tested separately. We also examine the configuration of life-cycle policies, which can help automate data management. The combination of these features allows more sophisticated storage configurations and protection of the fragments against ransomware attacks.
To make the configuration as smooth as possible, we provide pre-configured templates for each approved storage provider in the frXOS user interface – allowing you to set up your LOCATIONs with a few clicks.
Store Smarter with EU-Based Cloud Providers
At fragmentiX, we believe that data sovereignty and resilience are no longer optional – they’re essential. With every new release of frXOS, we aim to expand your options while maintaining our strict standards of security and independence.
Whether you’re operating within strict regulatory frameworks or simply want to avoid foreign data jurisdiction, our growing list of approved EU27 cloud providers empowers you to build a truly sovereign storage strategy.
